Brain Cramps

Have you ever done something to really embarrass yourself and hope that no one ever finds out about it, and yet, the event had enough humor that you really want to tell someone? Well, that’s kind of the situation I am in.

A few days ago, I went to Staples to buy some ink for my printer. It had been raining on and off all morning but not enough to deter me from my errands. I had just gotten in line to pay for my purchase, when the rain started to come down in buckets. I stuffed my wallet in the bag with the ink cartridge to keep it dry, waited for a lull in the rain and made a dash for my car. I popped the trunk with my handy remote and dropped the bag safely inside.

Even though it had only been a couple of minutes, by the time I climbed into my car, I was a soggy mess! I sat there for a few minutes, drying off and reviewing my errand list. Yes, I confess that I live in a land of post it notes! I think of them as little yellow memory aids. Besides, living out in the boonies it’s a real pain to get home and realize you forgot something.

The next stop was down the road at the shoe store where they carry the best socks in town. I found a parking place close by just as the rain started to get heavy again. It was going to be a quick dash in and out so I decided to leave my pocketbook in the car. I reached inside to grab my wallet but it wasn’t there! I was a little panicked as I searched through my bag. I checked the floor, I checked the seat, I checked under the seat…nothing! Many years ago, I lost my wallet and it truly was one of the worst experiences I have ever had. I didn’t have much cash but there was all the other ‘stuff’, Driver’s license! Credit card! Debit card! OMG, now I’m having a full blown panic attack! I’m talking to myself; I’m talking to the dog as I race back to Staples. Please let it still be there! I must have left it on the checkout when I took out my rewards card. I can’t believe I lost my wallet!

I screech into a parking space, the rain is now coming down in sheets…I don’t care! I run for the door and sprint to the checkout. The sales lady looks a little startled and so does the customer she is ringing up. “Sorry to interrupt but I was just here and I left my wallet, have you seen it? I blurted out all in one breath. Nonchalantly she glanced around her area. “Nope, I haven’t seen it.” My next thought was that someone must have picked it up and was about to assume my identity! Good luck if you want to be a 63 year old woman, with a maxed out credit card and a thirty-seven dollar check book balance!

As I walked back to my car, looking like a drowned rat, and about to break into tears; it suddenly hit me like a bolt of lightening! I remembered! I had put my wallet in the bag with the ink cartridge! Oh God, could I be anymore stupid? If I ever got the nerve to go back to Staples, would they cringe when they saw the ‘hysterical wallet lady’ coming through the door?

As I retrieved my precious wallet from the trunk, I collected my composure and got back in my car like nothing had happened.

Later that evening, as I attempted to tell my husband of my ‘ordeal’, I fell into fits of laughter; I’m still not sure if he knows what happened…guess he’ll just have to read my blog!

I know I'm not suffering brain cramps alone...care to share?

I hear you, Sunny, I am always checking where I put my wallet, or if I have a few bags, checking for my purse. I am 62 and am very 'protective' of my purse. I know that 'panic' feeling very well. At least, we still remember where it is 'finally'. lol

I do stuff like that all the time.

...haha! Sounds like the things I do on a daily basis! I saw your blog listed on Elaine's site. With the title "Brain Cramps," I had to check it out (because I seem to get them a lot). :-D

Funny, but a condition that grows more common with me every day.

I have reached the grand state called "burnout" and I am constantly loosing things at work!

If it helps, know you are not alone.

I spent much time one day repackaging meat in serving sized foil packaging. When I was gently patting the packages of meat INTO the kitchen cabinet, it finally dawned on me what I was doing...and the foil roll was in the freezer!

Gosh it is good to see you back. I've really missed your humor.
I have had so many such incidents that things going well are the exception and blog worthy.
You have a long way to go yet.

I've done it, too. Once I "lost" my car for three days when I parked it in an unusual place and then couldn't find my keys. Called the police and everything. Then I saw the keys in my shoe and it all came back to me at once!!

Oh, and welcome back! I've missed you too.

It sounds like something I would do! I've gotten to the point now that I make sure I put everything back in my purse in exactly the same place before I leave the store.

Well, today at Meijer I swiped my Meijer card over and over, it just wouldn't register...the cashier finally noticed it was my Costco ID Card!

And here I thought I was the only one who got caught up in situations like this!

Now that really sounds like something I would do! I have a couple of misplaced items that I am hoping I will come across soon. I'm sure I put them in a very secure place.....

I could just picture you racing around looking for your wallet in the pouring rain! Poor thing! But we've all been there! Glad you didn't REALLY lose the wallet!

LOL...great post. I can so relate.

My husband does it ALL THE TIME with his keys. He is absolutely phobic about losing his keys and at least once a day is in a "can't find my keys panic".

I too am 63 with cramping brain. If I don't put things back in their proper place, I forget and PANIC just as you did.

I have a horrible habit of carrying a big purse. I NEED a "wide mouth bass" purse (one with a huge, gapping top opening so I can see inside) The one I carry now has no outside pocket for my keys. I hate to put my keys and cell phone together, so I am continually hunting for my keys, due to dropping them in my "black hole".

The other day, I came in through the garage with several bags. I inadvertantly dropped my keys on my studio table in the garage. I put everything away and totally forgot about my keys...

The next day, I had a doctor appointment. You guessed it, I emptied my purse in an absolute triple panic. "I'm going to be late! I'm going to be late!!", exasperated and questioning where I last was with my keys....finally, a blink of reality pricked my mind and I remembered I went through the garage and voila, there they sat on my art table...

I just HATE IT when my mind cramps!

Oh the stories I can tell on myself, but we will let you have the spotlight today. One just have to laugh after while and move on with a great attitude that we are all in this alone.

Hi Sunny....What fun it is to discover this part of your blogging world.
I had been looking for my cel phone for a couple of days, searching my purse again and again. I almost never can hear it ring, so looking for it by calling doesn't work very often. So when it came time for me to loan my daughter some gas money, I lifted the bills in the zippered pocket, to discover the phone under the money..???!! Why are our purses soooo dark inside? Anyway, it's one more place to look next time the phone is missing...sigh.
Thanks for a nice visit....

Hi Sunny, I'm a visitor here from ELaine's Artic View blog and enjoyed this post very much because I too have had mini panic attacks when I could not find something important like a checkbook, wallet, etc. Thanks for sharing your experience. Glad all worked out well.
