The past few weeks have been a bit of a bumpy ride. Apart from having writer’s block, I experienced a couple of ‘graceful’ mishaps. One afternoon, while my son was visiting, I took him for a ride to show him some of the local scenery. Around lunchtime we stopped to grab a bite to eat and I wanted to let our dog, Lucy stretch her legs. I went to hook her leash and for whatever reason I didn’t catch it the right way, well she thought she was hooked and hopped out of the car…unleashed! I panicked as there was quite a bit of traffic and Lucy trotted off thinking she was attached. Without even thinking, I lunged at the poor dog, grabbing on to her fur. This action, of course, totally startled her and she pulled away with quite a bit of force causing me to fall down on my knees; I managed to catch myself just before my nose met the asphalt! Lucy, evidently thought it was playtime and came back to join in…thank goodness!
I can imagine how this all looked to anyone watching! My son figures if anyone had a video phone, I’ll be featured on ‘YouTube’ soon.
Then, one Saturday morning, a couple of weeks after my son left, I was taking Lucy to the groomer. We had had some freezing rain overnight that coated the vehicles but the ground just looked wet. I had put Lucy in the back seat of my car and was just about to open the front door to get my ice scraper. Next to the door there was a small patch of ice, that I hadn’t noticed and down I went! My automatic reaction was to grab the car for support; of course it was totally covered in ice so my arm just slid down the side as the rest of me slid under the car! Lying there just long enough to feel the, now, melted ice soak through my blue jeans, I crawled out from under my car, all the time being thankful that the neighbors were out of town!
When I fell the first time, it immediately felt like all my organs had been jarred and moved two inches to the left. The fall on the ice didn’t really hurt that much…at first. It wasn’t until later in the day that the pain hit…with a vengeance!
Now, slowly, I am on the mend, I am moving a little easier and can sit for longer periods of time. These ‘graceful’ moments served as a reality check, a reminder that this older body doesn’t bounce back the way it used to. Having ended up in a heap on the ground twice, I have concluded this body doesn’t bounce at all – Ha!

Oh me...what a streak of bad luck! I was so scared Lucy got in the traffic...whew.
I had to learn to really slow it down and look where I am stepping....one fall was all it took! I didn't bounce either, but slid my palms on the pavement...taking all the skin off..not fun!!!
Those injured areas seem to have total recall of the old injuries too. A broken ankle at Christmas, 2years ago still gives me a touch of ankle pain and a tiny hint of sciatic nerve pain. I spent that whole Spring recuperating. I hope you're completely pain free soon, Sunny.
You poor thing. Those incidents sounds painfully miserable. I have had a number of them myself and you are right we don't bounce anymore. It is a big thud with lots of aches afterwards when you get older.
Oh Sunny---I'm sorry to hear this. Any fall does 'something' to the body!!!! I have such a fear of falling ---and when we hike, I am always looking DOWN... George says that I'm missing all of the gorgeous scenery ---but I still look down!!!! ha
Take care of YOU...
Hugs,
Betsy
I'll check YouTube to see if you're there. :-)
I'm sorry to laugh but that is just so funny that you went under your car!! That sounds like something that I would do.
I do hope you're not hurting too much anymore.
Funny how we can injure ourselves more by trying to save a fall.
Hope you are on the road to recovery.
I'd be worried if you were to bounce! I hope you will soon be able to really enjoy the lovely spring weather.
Oh, Sunny!
I'm sorry about your unfortunate events! :(But, you tell a great story!:)
I've imagined how it would feel to
sl-i-i-i-p under my car.
I fell recently in my classroom. One of my students tripped me. (accidentally!) I tried to catch myself, papers went flying everywhere, and I turned to see one little girl snickering into her hand! I can only imagine how comical I looked! I couldn't even blame her for laughing!
Hope you're mending nicely.
Blessings!
I see all those falls on America's Most Funniest Videos and I wonder how many bones that they actually broke. I hope you can keep feeling more comfortable. Falls are so awful. Take care.
The older I get the more I hate to fall. It hurts more. Take care of yourself.
Oh no..I am so sorry that you hurt yourself..you are lucky you didn't break anything..I hope you recoup soon:)
Oh my, Lucy is hazardous to your health.
Tried not to laugh when you ended under your car. I was discreet though and I'm sure you couldn't hear me.
I have found that I ususally feel pretty good till I try to get out of bed the next day when I realize, IT WAS NOT FUNNY.
Do hope you are healing well now.
I slipped and fell on slick rock yesterday, skinning my elbow and banging my knee pretty hard. I usually ignore these unless it's really bad, like yours, and then I take it easy as I heal up. Glad it wasn't worse, and hopefully you will be good as new before too long.
Believe me, you are not at all alone when it comes to being graceful in this way. I've put on a few 'You-Tube-Worthy' moments when hiking and being more concerned with getting a picture than where I was going!
I'm glad to hear you are on the mend--two falls in such a short time is not good. As you get older your body just doesn't get over these things so quickly. I can certainly relate as I do this kind of thing all the time. And yes, I am always thankful if no one is a witness to those "graceful" episodes.
That is so true the older we get the less we bounce. I'm so glad you didn't break anything but sorry to hear that you have been in pain for some time. At least it gave you something to write about. Hope body and brain are back to full capacity soon. I have missed your entertaining stories.
Sorry about your mishaps! Luckily your pride wasn't hurt too bad, either! You know you're getting old when you don't hurt until the next day! That's what usually happens to me! LOL! Hope you're on the mend soon!
I hope by now you've totally recovered from your falls Sunny. I remember falling five times one winter, three by my own hand and two due to other people over the space of three months. I felt so bad at the end of them all. You feel like you've been through a tumble dryer. I'm always leery about going out now when there is ice about and absolutely will not if I can help it. Here's to no more hard landings!
oh, my, have I been enjoying reading this...you have a real talent for writing. I don't know which I have loved most so far, but they all strike a cord with me.
