What's In A Name?

My morning usually starts off with a cup of tea and reading the online edition of the newspaper. I never have time to read the entire paper but I always read the obituaries. The other morning I noticed that a Mr. Pitz had passed on, I didn’t know him but I continued to read…he was survived by his wife of 55 years...her name was Olive. Please believe me, I mean absolutely no disrespect…but for the past 55 years, this woman has been known as Olive Pitz.

This got me thinking about other people I have known with ‘unusual’ combinations of names. In England I went to school with an Olive Green, and an Anne Teek. In high school I knew an Ann Franscisco.

As a teenager, I had a summer job at a bank; we had a customer named Izadore Bell (is a door bell), sometimes keeping a straight face wasn’t easy!

Another woman I knew was called Hope Lewis, she married Larry Hope and became Hope Hope. I wonder if she thought about that before she said, “I do.”

A good friend of mine used to date Jim Bagg, and I still like to tease her about that! For a while I worked with Mr. Fish…his mother’s name was Iona. Iona Fish, I dare you to say that without a smile!

In elementary school, my son had a teacher called Mr. Case, his first name was Justin. Justin Case…what were his parents thinking?

I’m sure I’m forgetting a few others, I probably will remember them as I fall asleep tonight!

Have you come across some odd name combinations?

My wife's maiden name was Berry. Which made he Isobel A Berry. the answer, I would always tell her, is obviously not.

I'm afraid I haven't known any interesting names such as the ones you cited, but I do thank you for starting my day with a smile.

A friend of mine, Judy, married a Brian Rudy. She kept her maiden name. I also knew a Phyllis Diller. And a Harry Dick. And I worked with an Ann Shirley - who all day had to say her name was Ann without an 'e'!
I like reading the obits to find unusual names and generational names shifts.

You definitely got my day off to a hilarious start! How funny and what are people thinking??? Or is that the problem -- they aren't/weren't! You're right it's all but impossible to say those out loud and not laugh.

Thanks for the fun, Sunny! Have a great day!

Cute post, Sunny... Names are interesting, aren't they??? You are really showing your age --by reading the obits... ha ha ... My Daddy used to say that he would read them to make sure he wasn't listed. That way he knew he was still alive... HA...

Not the type of names you are talking about --but there was an unusual name in my family. My brother Ray Banks married a gal named Evelyn Banks... Same last name but no relation. SO--Evelyn's name was Evelyn Banks Banks....

Hugs,
Betsy

When I first started work, my best pal was called Donald Sinden. But by far the best was a lorry driver I once worked with called Robin Hood...seriously.

The funniest I ever saw was a birth announcement: We have a son. His name is John. We will call him Andy.
The logic...

I remember reading about a guy in Texas whose last name was Hogg, and he named his two daughters Ima and Ura. Ima became quite famous, in spite of her name. And I've always wondered if anybody was ever named Ben Dover. Great stories!

My college roommate married Dirk Sippi and she became a teacher. Her kids called her Mrs. Sippi.

Great post.

Really cute post. It is bad enough to have your parents saddle you with a silly name but to willingly marry into such a situation takes courage.
I once laughed in the face of and demanded ID for a "Farmer Brown." ID checked out. OOPS.

Wow you sure know a lot of people with odd names. I have one to add to the list.
Winda Payne.

It's very strange some of the things parents name their kids. I am surprised that more of those kids don't go by their middle name or have their name legally changed. Fun post!

There's a radio presenter here in the UK called Miles Long. that one always makes me smile, although these days, perhaps some people won't find it funny, what with kilometres being more common currency. Shows I'm old, I guess. Enjoyed reading your posts. Nice blog.

Your name 'Sunny' suits you well - your post gave me a good chuckle. Mum always read (in this order) who died, date of burial and who married. Followed by things that interested ladies in those days.

There was a Lebanese chap introduced - his name was (not sure of the spelling) Anas, pronounced exactly the same way an English word is - I burst out laughing. I couldn't help it. My ex and his friends were not amused.

YOu have a very merry Christmas.
Cheers.

Merry Christmas Sunny! My Maiden name was un-spellable and un-pronouncable..so I would have settled for just about anything else than just an inital..a Y for my last name..then I got married and got a common name ..what a relief! :)

When I first started work it was with a Miss Carriage, our supervisir always used to blush and stammer when he had to address her.
I went to college with a girl who married a Jack Bracegirdle.
My niece married a man called Paul Brain, she refused to be called Mrs P Brain, so a family name was hyphenated to it.
I used to care for an elderly gentleman who had the name of Ebeneezer Pratt.
As for myself, my maiden name was Ward, and a Chinese friend could not understand why all the rooms in the hospital were called my name... Ward 1, Ward 2, etc.
My first married name was Wong, so I of course had all the jokes about the wong number! But coincidentally my sister's married name was Wight, so we were Mrs Wight and Mrs Wong.

Fun post Sunny!

Hi Sunny,
I just now discoved this other blog of yours.

In grade school, there was a teacher named Sandy Beach. Now I know that had to be deliberate on his parents' part.

I saw your post on husband and pets snoring, and boy, can I relate!

I went to grammar school with a Tim Burr and Chris Burr. Even at that young age I thought their parents must have had a warped sense of humor.
