A Hairy Situation

The other day I got my hair trimmed and for a long as I can remember which is many, many years, I still have the same old question, "What does it take to get a good haircut?"

Now let’s figure this out…I’m sixty-two and if I don’t even count the first 20 years, that leaves 42 years which is the equivalent to 504 months, now say I got a haircut every 2 months that would equal 252 haircuts. Even though my average time between haircuts it about 6 weeks; let’s just round it off to 250 haircuts in the last 40 years. We won’t even talk about the first 20 years, and especially the first 10 when my dear mother used to cut my hair by put a bowl on my head! Out of those 250 haircuts, I can count the times that I have been really pleased on two hands!

I find it difficult to stay loyal to one beauty salon when I hate what they did to my hair! On the other hand when I find someone I’m pleased with, they seem to leave for greener pastures! So the search for ‘haircut happiness’ continues!

For at least the past 20 years, I’ve worn my hair fairly short, nothing complicated and I only have 3 basic hair cutting instructions…DON’T cut my bangs, DON’T cut my hair so far above my ear that it looks like a white wall and NO crew cuts! I don’t know how much clearer I can be!

Whether it’s a high end beauty parlor, a franchised clip joint or even a barber shop…nobody listens!

Is it just me? Do we share the same experiences? How about the men…are you happy with your haircuts? Are men more fussy about their hair than, let’s say, our Dads were?

I’ll leave you to ponder while I search for a hat!

I met a blogger friend who lives near me and works at a top rate salon near my house and has cut my hair a couple of times now. She is great and actually does listen to what you say!
She is also a very good friend! :-)

I hear you, Sunny. I've also got short hair, and I had the same woman cut my hair for years in Boulder. Sometimes I wouldn't be super excited about the cut, but usually it was just fine. Then I moved away. My first cut was a disaster, one side noticeable longer than the other. The second, I went to a salon, and it was nice. The same woman, next time I went, gave me a horrible cut!! So then I went to a cheapo place because I figured I wouldn't may top dollar for it. I could live with it, but I certainly wasn't happy. I noticed the woman who works out in front of me has a nice short cut, so my last two have been from her hairdresser. I've been much happier. I know the feeling, though!!

I do so know what you are saying! I wear my hair quite short, it's naturally curly and if they don't cut it the way it curls, then it is a total mess.I finally found a guy in Portland when I was living there, who did absolutely incredible things with my hair and I've never been as happy with my hair or or a hairdresser! Then I moved to Seattle! It's taken me nearly three years to find someone that does a good job and I'm happy with her -- not as good as the guy in Portland, but good. Now, hopefully she won't move away!!

Surely can be a pain in the whatever!

I hate getting my hair cut! It never turns out right and I always end up going home and trying to "fix it" myself. Bad idea!

Great post: I've cut my own hair (clippers) for the past 8 years. Yes, sometimes I mess up, but it always grows back in a few days, or enough that you can't tell. By John Edwards standards that saves me $400 a pop!

This post has many answer to questions that I never asked myself, but that were there under my eyes everyday.
So I'm happy since I cut my own hair, not much anyway...
Most of the beauty salons workers simply don't know what they are doing.
Thank you for this funny and interesting post (and comments).

I started cutting my own hair in my teens, and have mostly done it myself ever since. I have little need to complain at results!

Such a relatable post. I perm my hair, then once a year get a cut similar to yours to let the hair recover from the chemical baths.
I am OK unless they go too short at the crown, then I have a cowlick that waves at all passersby.
Good beauticians seem to either get married or pregnant and leave you defensless. A male beautician is the perfect answer but our town is too small for that.
Guess it is necessary to be humbled every now and then with an awful cut.

My husband and I are so frugal that we cut each others hair.

You are not alone! Occasionally I have found someone who can cut my hair but then they move or quit or whatever then the search is on again. I thought I found someone who could cut my wavy hair but then last time her sugar was low and she butchered it! Aaaaigheeeeee! It's frustrating.

Betsy cuts my hair, so I get a good haircut every time. Seriously, she does a great job and her haircuts are just as good (or better) than any I've ever gotten in a barbershop.

Easy and simple is my motto. I wear my hair natural and long and at 55, I am considering trying to find a cut that makes me look more my age, then I go...what, am I crazy, lol?

Hi Sunny, I FINALLY found a woman (not far from here) that cuts my hair the way I want it. I saw another woman in the grocery store once --and asked her who cut her short hair because I liked her haircut. She recommended this woman--so I called her and have been going to her every 5-6 weeks for about 2 yrs. now. I never could wear my hair short until now because nobody cut it right... Now--I get a good haircut and can wear it short like I like it!!!! So easy to keep!!!

Hugs,
Betsy

I had the same problem for a while either too short or too long. Luckily my neighbour used to be a hairdresser and she does it how I like it and only charges 10 dollars so I'm happy.(Except I've never liked my hair too thin and too straight.

Just popped over here from GeraldGee's place ( I'm nosy, I know. OK)
Nice bright blog and plenty of interest for me, I am a bit older, but nevertheless I am with you with the haircut thing. My current hairdresser is persuading me to go for a short bob... not sure yet whether it is really me. Some days are OK and others I look like a sheep dog.
By the way your boombox isn't plugged in... I have noticed that a few of these have been disabled by the powers-that-be. I used to have one and then noticed all the songs were blanked out. Something to do with copyright I would guess.
We were in Massachusetts a couple of years ago, my son and family live in Dover NH. Loved it!
Ok by for now
Love Granny

I always tell my hairdresser to do what they want, as long as it doesn't involve pain (perm in any way, shape or form) or strange colours: it has to fit with the uniform.
When I wanted a shorter style one day though, they gave me a great look, but when I arrived home, my Mum had the exact same look! Needless to say my hair is long again...

This post was good to read as I didn't realize how many had this problem! I thought it was only me who has hardly ever liked a haircut. I am considering growing it long and going back to a pony tail!

My long hair scrunched back in a bun or a tail..hardly ever needs a trim, it does however take a long time to dry! :)

This Ozark farm chick is pickier about her hairdresser than she is her gynecologist. I have to fall in love with her. I have been blessed to find those good ones.

Ya'll have a wonderful day, I'm gonna'!!!

How timely.. I'm going through the same thing. I finally found one I liked a few years ago but then he just stopped listening to me. I keep saying do the top longer and the back shorter and he leaves the back long and the top really short. He may be dylexic but I've finally given up.
I was going to wait until I got to Paris and see if I could get one there but figure I'm playing Russian Roulette there as well as here. So I go tomorrow to a high end salon owner who charges an arm and a leg and hopefully he can do something for my poor bedraggled hair.

When I was younger, I'd come home from some salon, and make a comment either way (good or bad) on my hair cut. I'd love it, I'd hate it, or I just wouldn't be sure.

My Grandmother would always remind me, "you won't know if it is a good hair cut until you've lived with it for a week."

I think she's right about that statement. If I get a haircut I hate and I still hate it after a week, I usually go back and have them fix what they did, (if they can).

But, I've never worn my hair extremely short, so that could be a different story all together!

Cheers! Jenn.

At present I go to a "Great Clips". For some reason I have found a great haircutter. Her name is Holly. She is super. She is probably in her late 20s or early 30s. She remembers everything. Amazing. I think that could be the key. Find someone with a good memory, great skills (I think they are born that way) and does not talk too much. I find if they are talking a lot they cut a little crazy. I had someone do my hair one time who could not talk and work, so when she talked she had to use her hands. It was funny (sort of). The process took a while. Another thing, if they turn your back to the mirror, run like ----. This usually means they do not know what they are doing and you are in for a disaster.
